New Equipment that could help your game

  • Srixon Z 785 driver, Z U85 utility iron make TOUR debut at Travelers Championship

  • Srixon has unveiled a new Z 785 driver just in time for the Travelers Championship.Srixon has unveiled a new Z 785 driver just in time for the Travelers Championship.

Roughly two years have passed since Srixon’s Z 765 driver and Z U65 utility iron were released to the general public. Both clubs appear to be on the verge of being replaced after a Z 785 driver and Z U85 utility surfaced on TOUR at the Travelers Championship.

Srixon wouldn’t comment on the technical details, but based on photos taken Tuesday at TPC River Highlands, both clubs appear to have new technology and updated looks.

Visible in the center section of the crown is a braided design that likely hints at the addition of carbon fiber to the driver head. The material has been used in recent years to reduce weight in the crown that was repositioned elsewhere within the head to boost forgiveness.

A single weight port is once again positioned in the back of the head — similar to what was offered on Z 765 — but the orientation is now at a slight angle as opposed to being parallel with the face.

If Z 785 is anything like Z 765 — from a profile standpoint — it’s likely the smallest head in the lineup. The Z 765 came in at 445cc.

And while it wasn’t available this week on TOUR, Srixon will once again have two drivers in the upcoming lineup. The other option is a more forgiving Z 585 that landed on the USGA’s list of conforming driver heads back in May.

The Z U85 utility comes in at least five different lofts (2-6 irons) and has a thick muscle pad in the lower portion of the head that’s designed to improve forgiveness and turf interaction.

U.S. Open 2018: Phil Mickelson offered to withdraw, according to his wife

There were many people who wondered whether Phil Mickelson deserved to tee it up in Sunday’s final round of the 2018 U.S. Open after that bizarre decision to hit his golf ball while in was still moving on the 13th green on Saturday. Apparently, even Phil Mickelson was one of those people.

Mickelson’s wife, Amy, told Golfweek’s Beth Ann Nichols that her husband offered to withdraw from the event during a phone call to USGA executive director Mike Davis on Saturday. The five-time major champ was prompted to pick up the phone after hearing widespread opinion that he should have been disqualified.

FEINSTEIN: Why the USGA got it wrong with Phil Mickelson

“When he heard that, he called Mike Davis and said, ‘If I’ve done something that crosses the line that much, then I need to withdraw immediately,” Amy said while her husband signed autographs after a final-round 69 to finish T-48.
